Initiated by a non-for-profit organization which has been supporting the school for many years, the idea of an innovative college preparatory public high school in this Harlem neighborhood was envisioned as a combination of private and public support. The APRCHS has a rich history and a very active alumni association. The major challenge was to define innovative education based on research and interviews with the school representatives, and to incorporate it into a standard NYC DOE high school program, within existing landmark building facilities.
